Crain`s Chicago Business Newsroom

Macy`s plans to open an 850,000 square foot distribution center about 50 miles southwest of Chicago in Minooka. The Cincinnati based department store operator said Monday that it has signed an agreement to buy to 49-acre property at 600 Mid Point Road from Rosemont based developer Opus North Corporation.
The warehouse, which initially will employ about 210 workers, is expected to open next spring. In conjunction with the move, Macys plans to close and sell its existing distribution center at 4000 W. Diversey Ave. in Chicago. Macys also said it will move a furniture clearance store from the Diversy site to a shopping center near Westfield Fox Valley in Aurora. "While our current Chicago distribution center which contains 1.55 million square feet spread over six stories of a building developed in stages since the 1930`s has served to company well for decades, it is antiquated and inefficient for moving merchandise to meet current standards in the retailing industry", Macy vice chair Tom Cole said in a news release. About 350 employees work at the Diversey property, and Macys said it plans to offer employment elsewhere to as many workers as possible.
